SUMMER JAZZ WORKSHOP

This two-week intensive course at Pasadena Conservatory of Music, for students in seventh grade and up, will develop foundations of jazz improvisation, theory, and history. 

Week one: July 8-12, 3-7 p.m.

Week two: July 15-19, 3-7 p.m.

One week: $275     Both weeks: $525

Beginning, intermediate, and advanced students will

• study with some of L.A.’s great jazz teachers and get to know Pasadena Conservatory of Music’s jazz studies program and faculty;
• gain a comprehensive knowledge of jazz traditions;
• connect with other local music students;
• participate in daily master classes with professional musicians;
• learn to play pieces by masters like Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, and more; and
• perform in a public jazz concert.

Students are welcome to sign up for one or both weeks.

No audition required.

CONTEMPORARY PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

This lively ensemble for musicians, drummers, percussionists, and the drum-curious will challenge you, introduce you to new musical forms and ideas, and help keep your skills sharp during the summer months!

Tuesdays and Thursdays: July 9-25, 6-8 p.m.

This six-session workshop is open to all musicians, regardless of previous percussion experience. The three-week workshop will culminate in a performance. No audition required.

Percussionist and teacher T.J. Troy performs regularly with ensembles in and around L.A, including the Arabic orchestra MESTO and local klezmer stalwarts The Shpil. His group, Run Downhill, explores the storytelling narrative inherent in traditional folk music. T.J. has taught at numerous universities and schools, served as the percussion department coordinator at Citrus College, and currently teaches percussion at Pasadena Conservatory of Music.
