THEORY
Fundamentals of Music
The first course in the three-year
theory track , this course introduces students to the
principles of notation, scales, intervals, triads, harmonic function,
seventh chords, ear-training, sight-singing and analysis of musical
works. Students should have studied an instrument at least two years
prior to enrolling.
This class
is offered to two separate age groups:
- 7th to 12th graders: Tuesdays, 4:00-5:00pm
- Adults: Thursdays, 10:00 am-12:00 noon (Fall Quarter only)
Diatonic Harmony and Musicianship I and II
In levels two and three of the three-year
theory track students study harmony and analysis, including scales,
chords with inversions, chord progressions, four-part harmonization
and voice-leading, cadences, non-harmonic tones, seventh chords, secondary
dominants, figured bass, modulation and harmonization of melodies. The
practical application of material is covered through written assignments,
analysis of music from different periods and styles, and the development
of ear-training and sight-singing skills.
These classes are offered to two separate age groups:
- 7th to 12th graders: Thursdays, 5:00-6:00pm
- Adults: Thursdays, 10:00-12:00 noon (Winter-Spring Quarter)
Each course in the three-year theory track is self-contained. Students who complete the track are qualified to sit for the AP examination in music theory.
