Theory for 7th - 12th grade students

Each course in the three-year theory track for 7th to 12th grade students (Fundamentals of Music, Harmony and Musicianship I & II) is self-contained. Students who complete the entire track are qualified to sit for the Ap examination in music theory.


Fundamentals of Music (3 quarters)

The first in a three-course series, the class introduces students to the principles of notation, scale construction, circle of fifths, intervals, triads, seventh chords, harmonic function, simple and compound meters, musicianship skills and analysis of musical works. This course is designed to enhance the student's understanding of the language of music and is recommended for the general listener as well as those involved in instrumental and vocal study.
Saturday, 10 - 11 am OR Monday, 5 - 6 pm
Quarterly Tuition: $240 / $216*

Harmony and Musicianship I (3 quarters)

The second class in a three-course series, Harmony and Musicianship l presents the study of harmony and musical analysis including all scale types, chord progressions, four-part harmonization and voice-leading, cadences, non-harmonic tones, secondary dominants, figured bass, modulation and harmonization of melodies. Practical application is achieved through written assignments, analysis of music from different periods and the development of ear-training skills.
Saturday, 11 - 12 pm

Harmony and Musicianship II (3 quarters)

Theory for Adult Students

Courses for adults are designed to enhance the understanding of the language of music and is recommended for the general listener as well as those involved in instrumental and vocal study. Instrumental study is not required of adults.

Fundamentals of Music (1 quarter)

This one-quarter course for adults covers the same material described above under Music Fundamentals for 7th to 12th graders.

Musical Form and Analysis l, ll, lll (3 quarters)

This new course is designed for students with music theory background, The course offers a study of the stylistic elements (melody, harmony, rhythm, texture), formal structures and compositional techniques in works from the Middle Ages to the present. Students will examine works from each period with most emphasis placed on compositions from the Baroque to the present. Prerequisite: at least 2 quarters of Music Theory.

April 11 - June 13 (10 weeks)

*Students concurrently enrolled in individual instruction at PCM pay the reduced fee.
